In Texas, a grocery chain is now inspiring memes. One goes like this: “State and federal resources are struggling to get into impacted areas. H.E.B. — outta the way, we’re coming.”
I love how they prepare, how they cope, and how they plan for the recovery. They clearly understand that they play a vital role.

I live in the west Texas desert, hundreds of miles from the coast. As soon as they knew it would hit the state, signs were posted in our local HEBs announcing limits on certain items like flats of bottled water, so they could be distributed to the coast. Everyone uses bottled water–construction workers, oil & gas workers, anyone with well water and even most on municipal systems, as it’s naturally hard, heavy metals are common, and water is plain scarce in the desert. But I heard nobody complain. Nor did folks complain about shelves bared of the store-brand bread and having to pay a little more for other brands. It’s just the kind of thing this store chain does.

I’m glad to hear that some people have the initiative to take care of themselves.
